We Love Dogs… But Here’s Why We Ask That Pets Stay Home

One question we’re asked from time to time is, “Why can’t I bring my dog into the store?”

The answer isn’t because we don’t like dogs. In fact, many of us are dog lovers ourselves. We know that most dogs are friendly, well-behaved, and treasured members of the family.

Our no-pets policy exists for one reason: safety.

Our Location Presents a Unique Challenge

Garry’s Garden Gallery is located close to the Humane Society. Because of that, stray cats occasionally wander through our outdoor shopping areas and greenhouses.

While many dogs remain calm, others naturally want to chase a cat. Unfortunately, we’ve experienced this firsthand. A dog spotted a cat, lunged unexpectedly, and a customer was knocked to the ground and seriously injured.

That incident reinforced something we already knew: even the best-trained dog can react instinctively in the right circumstances.

We Want Everyone to Feel Safe and Comfortable

Not everyone enjoys being around dogs. Some customers have allergies, some are genuinely afraid of them, and some members of our staff are also uncomfortable around dogs.

We want every person who walks through our doors to feel relaxed and welcome while they shop.

Even Friendly Dogs Can Be Unpredictable

A busy garden center is filled with shopping carts, children, plants, displays, and lots of activity.

Even the calmest dog can become startled, excited, or distracted. While rare, any dog can react unexpectedly when frightened or overstimulated, creating a situation where someone could be knocked over or injured.

Our policy isn’t about assuming dogs are aggressive. It’s about recognizing that accidents can happen, and we’d rather prevent them than deal with the consequences.

Thank You for Understanding

We know this policy may disappoint some dog owners, and we truly appreciate your understanding.

Please know that our decision isn’t based on a lack of love for dogs. It’s based on our commitment to providing a safe, comfortable shopping experience for every customer, every staff member, and even the animals that occasionally find their way onto our property.

Please note: Trained service animals assisting a person with a disability are always welcome, as required by Ontario law.
